Non-Hobbit prequel?

I've been hearing about a possible Lord of the Rings prequel movie that would not be The Hobbit in various places across the web. Does anyone know anything about this? I've heard of the nonprofessional (is that the right word? Or would 'unofficial' be a better choice) film involving Arathorn, Gilraen, and Estel, but I'm not sure if that is what I'm hearing about or not. Did that ever even come to pass?

Anyway, maybe I'm just hearing a bunch of unfounded rumors and speculation, but it brought a new thought to mind: if there was to be a LotR prequel that is not The Hobbit, what would it be? Would it be one of the many stories in The Silmarillion? Or would it be about Aragorn's adventures as Thorongil or something similar?

What do you think would make a good prequel, especially considering that a majority of the audience isn't familiar with Tolkien's works as much as PJ's movies. In other words, the general audience might have a hard time relating to Feanor and his sons since Galadriel is pretty much the only character they would recognize in a film version of the Flight of the Noldor as opposed to a prequel about a young Aragorn.

Thoughts?

Personally, I'd love to see the Akallabêth with Isildur, Elendil, etc. on film. At the same time, I'd be afraid that a director might make the Numenorians completely feeble and weak-minded like PJ made Denethor in the films. Seriously, who'd want to see a movie!Denethorish Ar-Pharazôn? Not me!

Personally, I haven't heard jack about it, but if they could de-Filmamirize the House of Hurin, I'd love a Thorongil-era piece. (Probably wouldn't happen though... Denethor would likely be painted even further into villany for disliking Aragorn or turned into as much of a spineless wuss as his second son is in the trilogy because Ecthelion doesn't wuv him. On the other hand, I can always imagine Stephen Briggs in the role of young!Denethor and think happy thoughts.)

The downfall of Numenor has got to be a Special Effects Department's fantasy or nightmare in the making, depending on the budget. ;) But shiny...

See, that's what I'd be worried about too. They'd probably make Denethor a reckless jerk to show why Ecthelion preferred Aragorn.

Yeah, unfortunately I think you're both right on this.

What I'd heard is that either they were going to do the Hobbit as a two parter or perhaps do a prequel to the Hobbit but with no real information on what it would be about.
What's in a name?

I haven't heard anything about that, but personally I'd be happy to see any kind of prequel based on Tolkien's works! But I don't think they would because most people are more familiar with PJ's movies then the actual books. And if they are familiar with the series, most are familiar with the triology and The Hobbit not anything from The Silmarillion or The Unfinished Tales (which I can understand... they're "hard reads" for sure!) and the movie industry is about making money (I love movies but it IS about the profit ^^). The thing that would bring most LotR fans back into the theatres is The Hobbit. I'd be shocked if they did any other sort of prequel.. but I'd definitely welcome it :)

I've heard of it; it's called Born of Hope. See bornofhope.com

It looks like they respect Tolkien's work, but it's about Arathorn and Gilraen, along with Cute!Baby!Aragorn. I think it's promising!

When I first saw this post, I thought you meant Ancanar.

I went and had a look at Born of Hope and that made me practically bounce in my seat! I hope they manage to complete this, because I would dearly love to see it.
